Breeding of sheep and goats

Bandur, Deccani, Bellary, Kenguri, and Hassan sheep breeds are valuable domestic breeds and have evolved over thousands of years to adapt to the climatic conditions of the region. They are good breeding species if managed in a scientific manner. Considering this, the Karnataka government has adopted a policy of sheep and goat breeding. Accordingly, it is recommended the genetically superior rams or bucks of local sheep and goat breeds of the respective districts should be used for breeding. So the corporation has been making many programs in the same direction.

Therefore, sheep and goat farmers should at least change the breeding ram or buck once in every 3 years and should not use the rams or buck born in the same flock for breeding purposes, as it leads to inbreeding and this may cause more lamb mortality, low birth weight of lambs, lambs with low immunity against the diseases. So, many programs are been formed to prevent inbreeding and to develop genetically superior indigenous breeds of sheep and goats.
